Fiscal Department
Composition and Maintenance of the Various Budgets
Expenditures at NEIU are closely monitored throughout the year. This is to make any necessary revisions in a timely fashion.
Processing of Monthly Bills Payable
All bills incurred by the Intermediate Unit are submitted for payment each month. The first two weeks of the month are spent sorting, evaluating, and preparing items. Thereafter, checks are drawn, approved at the Intermediate Unit monthly board meeting, and forwarded to respective vendors.
Payroll Operations
This operation realizes the payment of approximately 500 employees on a bi-weekly basis. The operation is completely computerized so reporting to the required agencies can be made as quickly and as accurately as possible.
Special Education Billing
Changes in Special Education funding have resulted in the need to bill school districts directly for these services. Currently NEIU is billing its 20 member districts as well as approximately 50 other non-member districts, out-of-state students and state wards. These billings total approximately $13 million and enable us to maintain a high quality of Special Education within the Intermediate Unit. A state of the art computerized system enables our fiscal department to bill districts more accurately.
Management Information Services Billing
This involves the billing for computers and computer-related services within the districts. In addition, printing and audio/visual services are billed out to school districts when services are rendered.
Purchasing
The purchasing of all school, janitorial and other building supplies are handled under the offices of the Fiscal Department. Bids are submitted by competing agencies seeking the opportunity to serve the NEIU, insuring a fair and equitable awarding of contractual agreements. The Fiscal office also coordinates joint purchasing with our member districts in the purchase of fuel oil and copy paper to obtain the lowest cost possible.
Data Processing
Data processing services are offered to our member districts at much less than market prices. Services available are grade reporting, attendance, payroll, fund accounting, and personnel and student scheduling. This budget is self-sustaining; member districts request specific services and then are billed directly by the Data Processing Department.
